Apply for Medicare Supplements
When it comes to enrolling in the Medigap policy, timing is everything. It can affect whether private insurance companies can deny your coverage or charge you more. Read on to learn about applying for Medicare Supplement plans.
Enrolling in Medicare Supplement
The best period to register for a Medicare Supplement plan may be during your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period. This is a six-month window that starts on the first day of the month that you turn 65 and signed up for Part B. During the Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period, the private insurer that provides the Medicare Supplement coverage cannot:
- Make you wait for your Medicare Supplement coverage to become effective.
- Refuse to sell you any of the policy it offers, or
- Charge you extra fees for your coverage due to medical history
Enrolling After your Open Enrollment Period is Over
If you try to enroll in a Medigap policy after the Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period is over, you can be charged more or declined based on your medical history. In some cases, you will have to undergo medical underwriting in order for the insurance company to decide to enroll you in the plan.
