What are Medicare Supplements

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) helps cover the out-of-pocket-cost and healthcare services left behind by Medicare Part A and Part B. These plans help Medicare beneficiaries pay for some of their Medicare expenses, such as their coinsurance and deductibles.

There are ten standardized Medigap plans, which includes Medicare Supplement Plan A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N. The carriers that offer Medicare Supplement plans do not have to provide every plan, but they must provide at least Medigap Plan A. The plans are available for purchase in all states and are popular with Medicare beneficiaries who want little to no copays when receiving healthcare services.

Basic Benefits of Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan

While each Medigap plan provides a different level of coverage, each lettered plan must include the same standardized coverage no matter the carrier and state you live in. For instance, Medigap Plan N in Texas has the same basic benefits as Medigap Plan N in New York. All Medigap plans must cover at least a part of the following basic benefits:

  • Part A coinsurance costs
  • Part A hospice care copayments or coinsurance
  • Part B copayments or coinsurance
  • First 3 pints of blood used in a medical procedure

Some Medicare Supplement plans include extra basic benefits, which include:

  • Part A deductible
  • Part B excess charges
  • Part B deductible
  • Part B preventive care coinsurance
  • Foreign travel
  • Skilled Nursing Facility care coinsurance

How Medicare Supplements Work with Other Health Insurance Plans

Medicare Supplements are only designed to fill the gaps left behind by Original Medicare, not Medicare Advantage plans, Medicaid, TRICARE, or group health coverage. It is illegal for a private insurance company to sell a Medicare beneficiary a Medigap plan if they currently have Medicaid or a Medicare Advantage plan.
