Dental & Vision

Dental and vision coverage can be hard to obtain through Medicare, but there are a few possible routes to do so. Let’s take a look at some of the best ways to get dental and vision care.

Dental and Vision Care Through Original Medicare

Dental and vision coverage under Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) is very limited. To have these services covered, you will have to have a serious medical need. In other words, unless you have a consistent or emergency medical issue that requires either dental or vision care, it will not be covered by your insurance.

Suppose you want coverage for things such as checkups, glasses, dentures, etc.. In that case, you will have to seek other plans to add to your Original Medicare coverage.

Dental and Vision Coverage Through Medicare Supplements and Stand-Alone Plans

Medicare supplemental plans offer the same coverage as Original Medicare, so you will never have to worry if your basic medical needs are covered. It also, of course, provides additional coverage.

For the most part, supplement plans do not offer much dental and vision coverage. You may, however, choose to enroll in a stand-alone plan that covers dental and vision care. While no Medicare-specific plans fully cover these benefits, there are plans out there that may do so. If you find that you want more dental and vision coverage than is available with your supplement plan, consider adding a stand-alone plan.

Dental and Vision Coverage Through Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage, sometimes referred to as Medicare Part C, is an alternative to Original Medicare (Parts A and B). It provides additional benefits, including dental, vision, and hearing services not available under Original Medicare alone.

Because Advantage plans cover doctor’s visits and checkups, they often by default cover dental and vision care. However, be wary when choosing a plan. Often, providers will greatly exaggerate the amount of coverage they offer in this area.
